Every five years, NIAMS revisits and updates its strategic plan, a document designed to guide us in our decision making about the research the Institute will support. This is an important opportunity for individuals and organizations to provide input on NIAMS’ priorities and direction moving forward. The Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2025-2029, which will replace the current Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2020-2024, will focus on cross-cutting thematic research opportunities where the Institute can be best positioned to make a difference in the lives of all Americans. Public input is vital to this plan, both to articulate bold scientific aspirations and to identify research advances that could have the most impact. 

We are casting a wide net and want to hear from all interested parties, including researchers in both academia and industry, health care professionals, patient advocates and advocacy organizations, scientific and professional organizations, federal agencies, and any other interested members of the public. Your feedback can make a significant impact on how NIAMS plans for the future. If you are part of a large organization, please consider submitting a single comprehensive response that reflects the views of your organization’s membership as a whole. 

When I started as NIAMS Director in early 2021, I spent a lot of time listening to colleagues and stakeholders to get a better understanding of the Institute, and how it can best serve the needs of Americans who are impacted by our disease areas. Listening is one of my most powerful tools as a leader. I cannot emphasize enough how important and valuable community input is to the direction of the Institute’s updated strategic thinking.
